Latta Place Historic Site

The Federal-style plantation house features period rooms, a kitchen house, and agricultural buildings spread across the historical grounds at Mountain Island Lake.

Built in 1800, James Latta, an immigrant merchant from Northern Ireland, established this 742-acre cotton plantation which operated with 34 enslaved individuals.

The site presents educational programs about agriculture, domestic life, and social structures of the early nineteenth century North Carolina Piedmont region.

Guided tours of the main house and self-guided tours of the grounds are available daily, with special programs for school groups and summer camps.

The property maintains rare breeds of historical livestock and demonstrates traditional cotton cultivation methods through hands-on agricultural exhibitions.
