Mural Arts Philadelphia, Public art program in Philadelphia, United States.
Mural Arts Philadelphia is an arts organization that manages thousands of colorful wall paintings across the entire city. The project encompasses outdoor art in different neighborhoods, ranging from small to large pieces, and forms one of the largest public art collections in North America.
The organization was founded in 1984 to use blank walls for artistic collaboration instead of graffiti. What started as an anti-graffiti approach grew into a major arts program that has shaped the city's visual landscape.
The organization brings together local artists and neighborhoods to create public art that speaks to community values and stories. You can see this collaboration reflected in how the murals relate to the character of different areas throughout the city.
The artworks are scattered throughout the city and can be viewed for free at any time; information is available online or at the headquarters. For the best experience, wear comfortable shoes and visit multiple neighborhoods to discover the range of work.
Many of the murals are created through workshops where residents actively participate in the design and painting. This hands-on involvement means each piece becomes a reflection of the neighborhood itself, not just an artistic installation.
