Nannen Arboretum, Botanical garden in Ellicottville, New York, US
The Nannen Arboretum is a botanical garden spanning 8 acres with over 250 species of trees, shrubs, flowers, and herbs arranged in themed gardens and walking paths throughout the grounds. The property also includes Lake Nipponica, which is home to ornamental carp.
The arboretum was founded in 1976 and transferred from Cornell Cooperative Extension management to the Town of Ellicottville in 2013. This transition marked a shift in local control of the garden's future.
A replica Japanese Stone Garden sits within the grounds, and 13 herb beds display plants used in cooking and traditional remedies that connect visitors to everyday plant knowledge. This Japanese-inspired design creates a quiet space where people pause and experience nature from a different perspective.
The property is open daily from dawn until dusk with no admission fees for visitors. Two nature study halls are available on the grounds and can be reserved in advance for educational programs and special events.
Lake Nipponica within the grounds is known for its collection of ornamental carp that creates a connection to Japanese garden design traditions. These decorative fish can be seen swimming and add to the contemplative quality of the place.
