Mount Mercy University, American Catholic liberal arts university
Mount Mercy University is a private institution in Cedar Rapids founded in 1928 by the Sisters of Mercy. The campus spans about 40 acres with a mix of older and newer buildings nestled in a residential neighborhood of the city.
The institution was established in 1928 to provide women with higher education through two-year programs. It became a four-year college in 1957 and received official accreditation in 1960, then opened to male students in 1969.
The university's name reflects its Catholic roots and mission of compassion. The Our Mother of Sorrows Grotto on campus serves as a quiet gathering space where visitors can pause and reflect on the community's spiritual traditions.
The campus is located on a hilltop in a residential area and is easy to navigate on foot. Visitors should check in at the campus office to arrange a tour and learn about the buildings and facilities.
The university is planning a complete merger with neighboring St. Ambrose University, allowing students to take courses at both institutions and creating new opportunities. This strategic partnership represents one of the largest changes in the school's history.
