Calder Houses, Historic brick houses in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Calder Houses consist of two identical two-story front gable cottages constructed of brick on stone foundations at 1214 and 1216 2nd Avenue.
Charles Calder, who arrived from New York in 1851, built these houses in 1868 and accumulated substantial real estate holdings in Cedar Rapids until 1890.
These structures stand as examples of 19th-century architectural design and represent the early residential development patterns of Cedar Rapids during its growth period.
The houses remain among the oldest standing structures in Cedar Rapids and received National Register of Historic Places recognition in 1978.
The twin houses maintain their original architectural features and demonstrate the building techniques used by settlers who shaped Cedar Rapids' early urban landscape.
