Paramount Theatre, Historic entertainment venue in Cedar Rapids, United States
The Paramount Theatre is a concert hall and movie theater in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, built in the Art Deco style of the 1920s. It features a main floor and a balcony level, with decorated plasterwork covering the walls and ceiling throughout the auditorium.
The theater opened in the summer of 1928 and was part of the last generation of grand American movie palaces before entertainment habits shifted. Over the following decades it was renovated several times but kept running as a venue and was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The theatre regularly hosts touring artists and local performers who bring concerts and shows to Cedar Rapids audiences. These events shape the cultural life of the community and create gathering places for people throughout the region.
The entrance is in downtown Cedar Rapids and easy to reach on foot from nearby streets. It helps to arrive before the show starts to get a good look at the auditorium before the lights go down.
The grand lobby still has its original 1928 chandeliers and marble staircases, which were never replaced during any of the renovations. Most visitors only notice this on their way out, when they cross the lobby a second time with fresh eyes.
