The National Guard Militia Museum is a military museum in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, focused on displaying war machinery across its outdoor grounds. The site features around 15 tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery pieces that visitors can walk around and examine up close.
The museum opened in 1980 to preserve the long military history of New Jersey and its contributions to armed conflicts. It holds uniforms, weapons, and documents spanning more than three centuries of military service and warfare.
The museum serves as a gathering place where visitors encounter the actual tools and machinery that shaped armed conflicts over generations. Walking through the grounds, you see how everyday soldiers lived and worked with these weapons and vehicles.
The museum is located on Eggert Crossing Road in Lawrenceville and opens on select days throughout the week. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since much of the experience involves walking around outdoor exhibits in all kinds of weather.
The collection includes the Intelligent Whale, an experimental submarine powered by hand cranks from the Civil War era. This vessel arrived from the Washington Naval Yard in 1999 and represents one of the earliest attempts to use underwater craft in warfare.
