Needham Street Bridge, Stone arch bridge in Newton and Needham, Massachusetts, US
Needham Street Bridge is a stone arch structure carrying traffic across the Charles River between Newton and Needham. Three semi-elliptical arches form the core of the design, each measuring about 27 feet (8 meters) across.
Built in 1875, the bridge was constructed to connect communities separated by the Charles River. The project responded to growing development in the Newton and Needham areas at that time.
The National Register of Historic Places listed this bridge in 1986, recognizing it as one of the finest stone arch bridges in the Boston area.
The bridge is accessible from Needham Street and carries regular traffic between the two communities. You can view the stone structure and its river setting from the bridge itself or from nearby riverbanks.
Unlike many historic bridges in the region that were altered or rebuilt, this one remains in its original 1875 configuration. Few visitors realize how rare it is to find a structure this old still serving its original purpose without significant modification.
