Naval Group Support Activity, Winter Harbor, Military facility in Winter Harbor, Maine, US
The Naval Group Support Activity, Winter Harbor, is a former military installation on the rocky coast of Maine, made up of several operational buildings built over many decades. The property sits right next to the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park, along a granite shoreline open to the sea.
The facility opened in 1935 as a Navy radio station and grew over the following decades into a major military communications base. Operations ended in 2001, and the campus was handed over to research and education uses.
After its military role ended, the site became a place where researchers study the coastal ecosystems of Maine. Visitors can walk past working research buildings and get a sense of the quiet routine of an active science campus.
The site is reachable by car and sits along the road that runs through the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park, with parking available nearby. Weather on this open stretch of coast can shift quickly, so sturdy shoes and a jacket are a good idea year-round.
The site was created through a negotiation between the Navy and John D. Rockefeller Jr., who was also involved in funding the development of Acadia National Park. This connection between military planning and conservation interests explains why the property ended up sitting so close to a national park boundary.
