Egg Rock Light, Coastal lighthouse in Frenchman Bay, Maine, United States.

Description

Egg Rock Light is a brick lighthouse tower on the rocky shore of Frenchman Bay in Maine. The structure rises 12 meters above the water and includes an attached keeper's house, both painted white.

History

The lighthouse was built in 1875 to guide ships through Frenchman Bay using a fifth-order Fresnel lens as its light source. Over time the original lens was replaced with modern electronic equipment that still directs vessel traffic today.

Culture

The lighthouse represents Maine's maritime heritage and stands as a visible symbol of the coast's seafaring traditions that locals and visitors recognize immediately. Its red flashing light has become part of how people navigate and understand this stretch of water.

Practical

The lighthouse continues to function as an active navigation aid with red flashes every 40 seconds, marking the passage between Mount Desert Island and Schoodic Peninsula. The island is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, and visiting requires planning and awareness of tidal and weather conditions.

Did you know?

A fog signal house from 1904 still stands on the island alongside the lighthouse, often overlooked by visitors despite its role in maritime communication. This second structure reveals how lighthouses once operated as part of a larger system of safety equipment.
