New York's 18th congressional district covers communities north of the city across Orange, Dutchess, and Ulster counties. Larger towns include Newburgh along the Hudson River, Poughkeepsie with its historic downtown, Beacon with art galleries, and Kingston with its old waterfront.
The district was created in 1813 and originally included upper Manhattan before boundaries moved northward. Several rounds of redistricting in the 19th and 20th centuries eventually shifted it into the Hudson Valley counties.
The district represents a population of 784,352 residents with diverse demographics, including 62.8% White, 18.3% Hispanic, and 9.9% Black communities.
The elected representative works in Congress in Washington and holds regular office hours in larger district towns. Constituents can submit inquiries through local offices or official channels and receive support on federal matters.
