Onaway State Park

Onaway State Park is a 158-acre park along the southeast shore of Black Lake, featuring cobblestone beaches, wooded areas, and exposed rock formations. The grounds include interconnected trails, designated swimming spots, and camping facilities spread throughout the property.

The park was established in the early 20th century and earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places due to the preservation of buildings like the Overlook Shelter. These early structures reflect how the site has served visitors for roughly a century.

The park serves as a place where visitors gather to swim, camp, and walk through nature, connecting families and friends with the landscape. Local recreational traditions are supported by pathways and lakeside areas designed to welcome people year-round.

Entry to the park requires a Recreation Passport, and overnight spots can be reserved through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources system. Plan your visit ahead to check availability and seasonal conditions.

The park features a 3-mile loop trail system that guides visitors along natural rock formations and the lakeside. These geological features are often overlooked but give the place much of its character.
