Carlson Oxbow Park, Natural park in Hessville, Hammond, Indiana.
Carlson Oxbow Park is a natural preserve covering 89 acres of wetlands and woodlands situated along the north bank of the Little Calumet River. The site features multiple walking trails, including a 1.2-mile loop with boardwalk sections that cross marsh habitat and connect to a regional river trail.
The land was acquired in 1964 primarily for flood control, and a river engineering project in 1975 straightened the waterway and created the distinctive oxbow lake formation. This event shaped the natural landscape visible today.
The name honors George W. Carlson, a long-serving city council member who helped shape the park's development in the 1990s. This reflects how communities recognize local leaders through place names.
The park is easy to explore on foot with well-marked trails, and the boardwalk sections make navigation through wet areas straightforward. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some paths can be slippery.
The park serves as an important breeding ground for more than 50 bird species, including peregrine falcons and blue-winged teals that move through the wetland areas. Red foxes and raccoons make their homes in the woodland sections, creating a dynamic wildlife ecosystem.
