West Fifth Avenue Apartments Historic District, Historic apartment district in Gary, Indiana
West Fifth Avenue Apartments Historic District is a residential area containing 30 brick buildings in Gary spread across roughly 20 acres. The four-story structures feature Colonial Revival, Renaissance Revival, and Gothic Revival details throughout the neighborhood between Taft and Pierce Streets.
The buildings were constructed between 1922 and 1928 as the city of Gary was developing its residential areas. The district received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
The buildings reflect Chicago architectural influences that shaped how people lived in this industrial city. Walking through the district shows how residents in the 1920s experienced urban apartment living.
The district is walkable and near public transportation along with local shops and services. The original architectural details on the buildings remain visible and the area is accessible for visitors exploring on foot.
Each building displays its own distinct architectural details despite being constructed during the same building period. This variation in design creates a collection of residential structures that tells different stories through their styling.
