Marquette Park

Marquette Park stretches about 1.4 miles along Lake Michigan's shoreline, featuring inland ponds, sand dunes, wetlands, a lagoon, and natural oak savanna areas. The grounds include the Octave Chanute museum, various recreational facilities, and multiple beach access points with parking areas.

Aeronautical pioneer Octave Chanute conducted important hang gliding experiments from the sand dunes in 1896, which now form part of the park grounds. These early flight attempts made the site a significant location in the history of aviation development.

The Marquette Park Pavilion, built in the 1920s, serves as a gathering place where the community hosts celebrations and cultural events throughout the year. Visitors can see how this building remains central to local life and traditions.
