Emerson High School, Public school building in Gary, United States
Emerson High School is a multi-story school building in Gary designed with spaces for both academic and recreational activities. The structure contains an auditorium, gymnasium, swimming pool, seven laboratories, art studios, and band rooms throughout its floors.
The building was designed in 1909 by architect William B. Ittner as a new educational facility. It received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 before permanently closing in 2008.
The 1927 Emerson School Strike occurred when African American students transferred from Virginia Street School, leading to the creation of Roosevelt High School.
The site is not open to visitors as the building has been abandoned and suffers from structural decay and environmental concerns. The grounds should not be entered without official permission.
The building implemented an innovative Work-Study-Play educational system that gained international attention in the early 20th century. This approach combined classroom learning with practical work experience and recreation within a single school structure.
