The Gary Land Company Building is a one-and-a-half-story wooden frame structure with a distinctive cross-gable roof dating from 1906. The building preserves the original appearance of an early administrative structure and stands today at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Pennsylvania Street.
The building was constructed in 1906 and served Gary during its founding years as the town's first town hall, post office, and school. In 1956 it was relocated to its current location, where it has stood since as a record of the city's early development.
The building displays how Gary looked and operated in its early years, with exhibits showing daily life of the first residents. Visitors can understand what role administrative buildings played in young cities.
The building is located at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Pennsylvania Street and is straightforward to find and visit. Access is straightforward, and you can explore the exhibits inside at your own pace.
The building originally served multiple functions at once, functioning not only as a town hall but also as a post office and school under one roof. This type of shared use was typical for small towns in their early phases.
