Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge

The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area in Lucas County featuring wetlands, grasslands, and forested sections spread across a large territory. Walking through the landscape, you encounter diverse habitats ranging from open water to dense tree cover.

The refuge was founded in 1961 to protect critical habitats for animals in the Great Lakes region. Since then, it has served as a sanctuary where species that have become scarce elsewhere can find shelter.

The refuge demonstrates how people and nature coexist, with pathways and viewing platforms designed for observing animals in their habitat. Visitors can see how wetlands are managed and notice the role these spaces play in supporting wildlife.

A special area called the Turtle Creek Island Unit offers a boat launch where visitors can explore waterways. This perspective from the water makes it possible to spot animals you might otherwise miss from land.
