Ouabache State Park, State park with bison exhibit in Wells County, United States.
Ouabache State Park is a 1,104-acre property with hiking trails, a swimming beach, Kunkel Lake for fishing, and camping facilities along the Wabash River. The grounds also feature tennis courts, basketball courts, and an enclosure where American bison roam freely.
The land evolved from a state forest and game preserve in the 1930s into a designated recreation area officially named in 1962. It gained full state park status in 1983.
The name Ouabache comes from the Miami Indian language and refers to the Wabash River's white stones and shimmering water. Visitors today still use this name to describe the river and surrounding landscape when exploring the grounds.
Multiple trails are available for visitors, ranging from shorter loops around the wildlife enclosure to longer routes through pine plantations. Sturdy footwear and water are recommended, especially during warmer months.
The park maintains a 20-acre natural setting where American bison live freely and can be observed by visitors from close range. This population demonstrates how these large mammals appear and behave in their typical surroundings.
