Peleg Arnold Tavern

Peleg Arnold Tavern is a colonial building in North Smithfield featuring traditional wooden construction and a central fireplace typical of its era. The house sits within the Union Village Historic District and displays original structural elements from the late 1600s.

Built around 1690 by Richard Arnold, the establishment grew in importance under Peleg Arnold in the years that followed. Peleg Arnold served as a Rhode Island Supreme Court justice and later represented the colony in the Continental Congress.

The tavern served as a gathering place where neighbors and travelers could share news and discuss local matters over food and drink. People from different walks of life met here to rest and build community connections.

The tavern is located near Great Road in Union Village and is clearly visible as a historic structure. Visitors should allow time to appreciate the exterior and its setting within the historic district.
