Woonsocket Senior High and Junior High Schools, Neoclassical school building in Woonsocket, United States.
Woonsocket Senior High and Junior High Schools is a neoclassical building featuring four Doric pilasters supporting a limestone facade with decorative panels inscribed Faith, Hope, and Charity. The structure grew over time as different sections were added to accommodate expanding enrollment.
The complex was built in 1914 as the city's main school and expanded twice during the following decades. Classroom additions arrived in 1925 and a junior high section was added in 1927 to meet growing needs.
The building reflects how much the city valued education in the early 20th century through its prominent design and central role in the community. Its grand appearance signaled that learning was important to Woonsocket's identity.
The complex sits at 357 Park Place near the Blackstone River and is easy to view from the street. Since the school closed in 2009, you can walk around the exterior to appreciate the architecture and layout.
The complex has an unusual E-shaped layout created by a U-shaped courtyard in its center. A gymnasium annex completed in 1952 was key to forming this distinctive footprint.
