Percy Priest Lake

Percy Priest Lake is a reservoir in Tennessee that stretches for 42 miles (68 kilometers) and covers roughly 14,200 acres (5,750 hectares) of water. The surrounding public lands span about 18,850 acres (7,630 hectares) with forests and recreation areas along Interstate 40.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finished the dam in 1967, creating the reservoir over the former town of Old Jefferson. The project reshaped the landscape and now helps control flooding and provide water supply for the region.

The reservoir serves as a gathering place for boaters and anglers throughout the year, with locals often spending weekends along its shores. Families use the public areas for swimming and picnicking during warmer months.

Visitors can explore the area from three campgrounds, eleven day-use zones, and twelve boat ramps scattered around the shoreline. Access points are usually close to paved roads and easy to reach by car.

An area of about 10,000 acres (4,050 hectares) within the reservoir is set aside for wildlife management and attracts birdwatchers. This zone provides habitat for waterfowl and native fish species in quieter coves away from boating areas.
