Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge
Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge, Church building in Basking Ridge, US
The Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge is a Greek Revival structure built in 1839 with red brick walls and stone foundation work. An Education Building and Memorial Chapel were added in 1955 to provide more space for various community activities and church functions.
The congregation was founded in 1717 and initially met in a log house before building this Greek Revival structure in 1839. The shift from temporary to permanent architecture reflects how the community had grown and solidified its place in the region.
The burial ground surrounding the building has served the community since the early 1700s, and walking through it offers insight into local family histories and the deep roots people have in this area. Visitors can read names and dates on the stones that span centuries.
The site is easily accessible from the parking area, and visitors can explore the burial ground and building at their own pace. Daytime visits work best for seeing the architectural details and reading the gravestone inscriptions clearly.
The sanctuary holds a communion table crafted from wood of a white oak tree that was over 600 years old when it was removed from the churchyard in 2017. This remarkable object allows visitors to witness a tangible connection between the site's deep past and the present day.
