Portland Club, Social club in Portland, Maine, US
Portland Club is a Federal-style mansion built in 1805 that occupies multiple floors along State Street, containing artworks and collections throughout its rooms. The building houses dining areas, lounge spaces, and recreational facilities arranged across different levels.
The building was designed in 1805 by architect Alexander Parris as a private residence before being converted to club use in the early 1900s. Its transition to the current purpose happened in 1921, and it gained National Register recognition in 1973.
The rooms reflect decades of social tradition, with their furnishings and decorative choices telling the story of how members have gathered and spent time together. These spaces show what mattered to the people who used them over the years.
The building contains several amenities spread across its floors, making it worth exploring the different levels to find the spaces that interest you. The layout guides you through dining and recreation areas naturally as you move through the structure.
The second floor houses a notable collection of handcrafted mahogany pool tables from different eras that show how central this pastime was to the club's identity. These rare pieces remain in their original condition.
