European settlement began in 1686 when Dutch settlers acquired land from Iroquois tribes, with Wilhelmus Beekman establishing the foundation of modern Rhinebeck.
The district includes numerous architectural styles from Colonial through Victorian periods, with the Dutch Reformed Church of 1802 standing as the oldest religious structure.
Properties within the district require Planning Board approval for exterior modifications, with federal and state tax incentives available for contributing property improvements.
Franklin D. Roosevelt personally influenced the design of the 1939 post office, incorporating Dutch architectural elements into its construction.
