Reedy Point Bridge, Cantilever bridge in Delaware City, United States
Reedy Point Bridge is a cantilever bridge that carries Delaware Route 9 over the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. The structure spans the waterway with a large main section designed to allow boat traffic to pass underneath.
Built in 1968 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, this bridge replaced an earlier lift bridge. The new structure was needed after the canal was expanded to accommodate larger vessels.
The bridge connects communities along Delaware Route 9 while providing views of Fort Dupont and the Governor Bacon Health Center.
The crossing allows vehicles to pass over the canal while ships can travel beneath it. Plan your crossing during off-peak hours in early morning or late afternoon for the smoothest flow.
The bridge crosses one of the busiest shipping channels on the East Coast, handling thousands of vessels annually. From the bridge, you can watch the careful maneuvering that ships must perform to navigate the narrow waterway.
