Red Banks Primitive Baptist Church, Protestant church building in Greenville, North Carolina
Red Banks Primitive Baptist Church is a wooden frame structure with a brick pier foundation situated near Meeting House Branch in Bell Fork. The building measures approximately 50 by 30 feet and sits on one acre of land where two country roads meet.
The original church was destroyed on December 30, 1863 when Union troops under Colonel Joseph M McChesney burned it during the Civil War. The present building was constructed in 1893 to replace the lost structure.
The church property includes a cemetery containing fewer than 20 markers, representing generations of local community members and their religious practices.
The church is easily found at the intersection of two rural roads in a quiet area with minimal traffic. The grounds allow for straightforward parking and visiting at any time of day.
The Pitt County Historical Society took control of this site in 2000, leading to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This preservation effort saved an important piece of local heritage from deterioration.
