Wachusett Reservoir

Wachusett Reservoir is a large water storage lake in central Massachusetts with coves and a rocky, wooded shoreline. The water is managed by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority to serve the surrounding region.

Construction of the dam began in the late 1800s and resulted in flooding that shaped the four surrounding towns in the early 1900s. The project was part of a major effort to secure water supplies for a growing region.

The Old Stone Church remains from communities that were relocated to make room for the water system. It serves as a physical reminder of how large projects reshape the landscape and the people who lived there.

The area around the reservoir has limited public access because it is managed as a protected water supply zone. Visitors should check in advance for any restrictions or designated viewing areas.

The strict protection of this water supply zone has allowed clean, natural habitat to flourish, which supports some notable fish populations. This makes it a surprisingly productive fishing destination despite its limited public access.
