Richmond National Cemetery, Military cemetery in Henrico County, United States
Richmond National Cemetery is a military burial ground spanning roughly 9.7 acres and surrounded by granite walls, containing graves of soldiers from multiple time periods. White marble headstones arranged in straight rows form the visual foundation of the grounds.
The grounds were founded in 1867 on land that once held Confederate fortifications from an earlier conflict. Initially, remains were transferred from other burial sites to consolidate them in one location.
This burial ground serves as a place where visitors come to remember soldiers from different wars and periods of American military service. The rows of identical markers create a solemn atmosphere that invites reflection on sacrifice and duty.
The grounds are open to visitors from sunrise to sunset daily, with office staff available during standard weekday hours for inquiries. Plan for uneven terrain and changing weather conditions as you walk through the expansive grounds.
A lodge building from 1870 on the grounds displays Second Empire architectural style and was designed by a senior military official. The structure blends office and residential spaces with a basement level in its distinctive design.
