James River Steam Brewery Cellars

The underground complex contains stone-lined barrel-vaulted tunnels stretching 146 feet in length and ranging from 10 to 17 feet in width.

The cellars, constructed in 1866, represent the last remaining structure of the James River Steam Brewery, which operated until 1879 before burning down in 1891.

These cellars demonstrate 19th-century industrial engineering through dressed ashlar granite construction and advanced storage methods before mechanical refrigeration.

The cellars stand at 4920 Old Main Street near the Rocketts Landing development, though visitors should note the structures remain on private property.

The facility maintained connections with Eagle Brewery of Pottsville, now Yuengling Brewery, recognized as the longest-operating brewery in the United States.
