The First African Baptist Church building features traditional architectural elements with a large interior space and a prominent organ installation.
Founded in 1841, the congregation began with 1,300 Black members from Richmond's First Baptist Church and grew to 4,500 attendees by 1869.
The church established itself as a center for African American worship, education, and social gatherings in nineteenth-century Richmond.
Sunday services start at 10:45 AM, while the church office operates from Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
The church installed a $2,500 organ in 1876, which was the largest instrument in any African American religious building at that time.
