Fairmount School, Historic school building in Church Hill, Richmond, United States.
Fairmount School is a former school building in Church Hill featuring a two-story structure with slate-covered mansard roofs and Gothic Revival architectural details. The original 1895 structure was expanded in 1908 with a two-story addition to accommodate growing student enrollment.
The building was constructed in 1895 during a period of school expansion in the late 19th century. An expansion by architect Albert F. Huntt in 1908 reflected the growing needs of the community and the changing demands on educational facilities.
The building served as Helen Dickinson School from 1925 to 1958, educating African-American students during the period of school segregation in the city. Visitors can still see the rooms that were once classrooms, now part of the residential community.
The building is located on North 21st Street and is not open to the public as it now functions as residential housing for elderly and disabled residents. You can view the exterior architecture and grounds from the street to see the historic structure and its architectural details.
The property spans approximately 2.4 acres and shares architectural characteristics with nearby Randolph School. These two buildings from the late 1800s demonstrate similar design principles that were common in educational buildings of that era.
