Rock Castle, Historic limestone mansion in Sumner County, Tennessee, US.
Rock Castle is an 18th-century stone house in Sumner County, Tennessee, built from local limestone and timber in an inverted L-shape. The ground floor holds four rooms that still carry original finishes and construction details from the Federal period.
General Daniel Smith built the house between 1784 and 1797 on land granted to him for his service in the Revolutionary War. It stands as one of the earliest surviving structures in this part of Tennessee.
The Smith Family Cemetery on the grounds is made from the same limestone used to build the house. This connection between home and burial place shows how deeply the family tied their lives to the land itself.
The property is open to visitors and offers guided tours through the house and grounds. It is a good idea to check ahead of time whether tours are running on the day you plan to visit, as availability can vary by season.
The grounds now sit along the shore of Old Hickory Lake, a reservoir created in 1954 when the US Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Cumberland River. The view from the property today would be unrecognizable to anyone who knew it in the 19th century.
