After the Hurricane of 1938, Roy Carpenter initiated the beach community by leasing land for parking and accommodating visitors with trailers and tents.
The beach contains 377 summer cottages passed through generations, creating a close-knit seasonal community of families who return each year.
Lifeguards supervise swimming activities from Memorial Day through Labor Day, while surfboards and boogie boards are permitted at both ends of the beach.
The steep drop-off within the first few feet of water entry and strong undertow currents shape the swimming conditions at this Rhode Island coastal location.
