Dunmere, Historic estate in Narragansett, United States.
Dunmere is an oceanfront estate spanning about 13 acres with granite structures, garden terraces, and stone-arched bridges along Ocean Road. The property retains its original entrance featuring a stone masonry arch and wrought iron gates displaying the name.
The estate was built in 1883 by architect John M. Merrick for Robert G. Dun, co-founder of Dun and Bradstreet. A major fire later destroyed the main house, leading to the division of the land into three separate residential properties.
The architectural style mixes Stick/Eastlake and Queen Anne elements, visible in the remaining structures and ornamental entrance gates. This blend reflects how wealthy families shaped coastal estates to display their taste and status during the Gilded Age.
The property sits along Ocean Road and can be viewed from outside, with the preserved gates and structures visible from street level. Most of the land is private, but the architectural details at the boundary are accessible from public areas nearby.
The Gardener's Cottage was originally a separate dwelling on the grounds and is one of the few structures that survived the major fire. It still stands today and shows the everyday style of worker housing on wealthy 19th-century estates.
