Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, Civil War battlefield state park in Rice, Virginia.
Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park is a Virginia state park that protects the site of one of the last major engagements of the American Civil War. A visitor center, a restored farmhouse, and several marked walking trails cover the grounds.
On April 6, 1865, Union forces defeated a Confederate army here and captured more than 7,000 soldiers, one of the largest single captures of the war. General Lee surrendered just three days later at Appomattox, making this one of the final blows of the eastern conflict.
The Overton-Hillsman House displays medical equipment and period furnishings that show how rural Virginia households lived during the Civil War. Walking through its rooms gives a concrete sense of how civilians and soldiers crossed paths during the conflict.
The park has several marked trails of different lengths, so you can choose a route based on the time you have. Signs along the paths explain the battle, making a self-guided visit easy and informative.
After the fighting ended, the Overton-Hillsman House served as a field hospital where both Union and Confederate wounded were treated side by side. This shared use of the same building by soldiers from opposing armies is documented on site.
