Architect Dabney Cosby designed and built Venable Hall between 1824 and 1830, creating the second oldest dormitory at Hampden-Sydney College.
The building originally housed the Union Theological Seminary, providing education for Presbyterian ministers until its relocation to Richmond in 1898.
The Parents & Friends Lounge occupies the former seminary chapel space, while the front lawn serves as the location for graduation ceremonies.
Major Richard Venable, class of 1857, purchased the building for $10,000 and donated it to the college, expanding the campus size twofold.
