Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park
Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, Civil War battlefield state park in Rice, Virginia.
Sailor's Creek Battlefield is a state park covering 379 acres in Virginia that preserves the site of a major Civil War engagement. Seven marked walking paths guide visitors through the terrain, while a visitor center features battle artifacts and the restored Overton-Hillsman House.
On April 6, 1865, Union forces won a decisive victory over Confederate troops at this location, capturing more than 7,000 soldiers. This battle occurred near the end of the war and weakened the Confederacy's ability to continue fighting.
The Overton-Hillsman House displays Civil War medical equipment and period furnishings that reflect how people lived during that era. Walking through its rooms gives you a sense of daily life in the early 1800s, showing how civilians and soldiers intersected during this time.
The park offers seven marked trails of varying lengths, so you can choose routes based on your time and energy level. The visitor center and interpretive signs throughout the grounds help orient you and explain what you are seeing.
The park preserves the actual field hospital location where both Union and Confederate soldiers received medical care during and after the engagement. This aspect reveals how both sides cared for their wounded in the immediate aftermath.
