Salem Willows is an oceanfront amusement park stretching across 35 acres along Salem Harbor, with distinct sections for different activities. The location features beaches, a pier, restaurants, arcade games, tennis courts, basketball courts, and children's rides for visitors of all ages.
Willow trees were planted in 1801 to provide shade for patients from a nearby smallpox hospital, and the park takes its name from these trees. Over time, this early purpose evolved into a recreational destination for the general public.
The Charleshurst Ballroom drew renowned musicians like Duke Ellington and Count Basie during the 1920s, attracting visitors from across the region. The venue reflected the location's role as a cultural gathering place for entertainment and social events.
The location becomes most crowded during summer months and works well for full-day visits since it combines multiple activities in one place. On July 4th, visitors can watch fireworks from Salem, Beverly, and Marblehead simultaneously from the beach.
