Description
Sauer Castle is a three-story brick house in the Italianate style with a four-story tower on Shawnee Road. The building overlooks the Kansas River valley and features the rounded arches and cornices typical of this architecture.
History
Anton Sauer commissioned architect Asa Beebe Cross to build this residence between 1871 and 1873. The construction materials arrived by boat from Saint Louis.
Culture
The estate served as a gathering place for Kansas City society members, with its marble mantels, ornate woodwork, and multiple formal reception rooms.
Practical
The property is privately owned and not open to the public, so visitors should keep their distance when viewing the building. The best view is from the road through the fence.
