Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio State Historic Site, Artist residence and workspace in Kansas City, United States.
The Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio State Historic Site is a painter's former residence and working studio in Kansas City, Missouri. The property includes a three-story house and a converted carriage house that the artist used as his main workspace.
Benton moved into this house in 1939 and stayed there until he died in 1975, making it his last and longest home. Shortly after his death, the state of Missouri took over the property and opened it to the public.
Thomas Hart Benton painted everyday American workers, farmers, and musicians, and his home reflects that same no-frills way of living. Walking through the rooms, visitors can see how closely his personal life and his work were connected.
The site is only open for guided tours, so it is worth checking the schedule before you go since times change by season. Tours cover both the main house and the studio building, so allow enough time for the full visit.
Benton died in 1975 in his studio, just hours after working on a painting that was still on the easel at the time. That last unfinished work is still on display in the studio today.
