KCTV, Television broadcast tower in Kansas City, United States.
KCTV is a television broadcast tower in Kansas City that reaches approximately 318 meters tall with a steel lattice structure. The tower stands without support cables on Union Hill and features a vertical cantilever design at its base.
The tower was built in 1956 and stood as the third tallest freestanding structure in the world at that time. Its construction marked a significant moment in television broadcasting infrastructure and the city's growth.
The string lights that adorned the four corners of the tower frame made it a recognizable landmark across the Kansas City area. For decades, these lights helped people navigate and identify the city's skyline from various locations.
The tower is visible from many locations across the city and offers distinctive views from different angles. Union Hill and surrounding streets provide the clearest vantage points to observe the structure.
In 1972, two people climbed the tower and remained at its summit for 14 hours as a protest against the Vietnam War. This unusual event remains a notable episode in the structure's history.
