Hy-Vee Arena, Indoor sports arena in West Bottoms, Kansas City, United States.
Hy-Vee Arena is a multi-purpose indoor sports and events venue in the historic West Bottoms neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. The two-story facility houses twelve regulation hardwood maple courts alongside additional amenities such as running tracks and a separated fitness area.
The building opened in 1974 as a home for a professional basketball team, following a design by German architect Helmut Jahn. A severe storm in 1979 caused major sections of the roof to collapse, and after reconstruction the space was later repurposed as a center for amateur sports and community events.
The name references the supermarket operator Hy-Vee, known throughout the region for supporting youth and recreational sports. Families from across the metro area regularly use the courts for weekend tournaments and casual games.
The complex is easiest to reach by car via the western interstate exits, with parking available directly next to the building. Visitors planning to use one of the twelve courts should check ahead to see if a private event or larger competition is scheduled that day.
The complex was the first facility in the United States designed with multiple levels specifically to allow different indoor court sports to run simultaneously. The combination of basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and indoor soccer under one roof was particularly novel at the time.
