Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Performing arts center in downtown Kansas City, United States.
The Kauffman Center is a building with two halls, one large for symphonic concerts and another for opera and ballet, both under a curved glass roof. The facade shows several layers of glass and metal that extend over multiple floors and give the interior plenty of natural light.
The idea for the center came from a local philanthropist in 1994 who wanted Kansas City to have a home for high culture. Construction began in 2006 with private donations and was completed five years later.
The facility serves as the permanent residence for the Kansas City Ballet, Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, and Lyric Opera of Kansas City performances.
Tours show the architecture and explain the acoustics of both halls when rehearsals are not taking place. The building has ramps and elevators, and the parking garage right next door connects through a walkway to the entrance.
A large pipe organ with 79 stops sits in the concert hall and is used for select programs. The seating is arranged in terraces so the audience can see the musicians from different angles.
