The building opened in 1935 as part of the Works Progress Administration program, creating employment opportunities during the Great Depression period.
The venue includes a Music Hall that presents Broadway shows, symphonies, and houses the Robert-Morton Theatre Pipe Organ from the Midland Theatre.
The Little Theatre section within the auditorium contains an octagonal ballroom that accommodates 225 guests for banquet-style events and gatherings.
Municipal Auditorium holds the record for hosting nine NCAA Final Four basketball tournaments between 1940 and 1964, ranking first among all venues.
