Coates House Hotel, Historic hotel building in downtown Kansas City, United States
Coates House Hotel at 1005 Broadway is a six-story building with brick walls and stone detailing that anchors downtown Kansas City. The structure displays the substantial masonry and classical proportions typical of major hotels from the 19th century.
Construction began before the Civil War, and the incomplete structure was commandeered for use as barracks by Union forces during the conflict. The building was finished after the war and opened as a hotel in 1868.
The hotel served as a gathering place for prominent visitors and performers who passed through Kansas City during its operating years. Its role as a destination for notable guests made it a social hub in the expanding downtown.
The building now operates as residential apartments in the Quality Hill neighborhood and is not open to the public as a hotel. You can view and photograph the exterior architecture and stonework from the street at any time.
After its renovation in the late 1880s, the hotel gained renown for Turkish baths finished in marble, a luxury amenity rarely seen in American hotels of that era. These baths were accompanied by specialty shops including a florist and a high-end bonnet shop on the premises.
