Shelta Cave, Natural cave in Huntsville, United States.
Shelta Cave is a limestone cave in Huntsville that extends far underground with multiple large chambers throughout its passages. During winter months, water collects in the lower sections to form a seasonal lake that supports the cave's underground ecosystem.
The cave was purchased and renamed by Henry Fuller after his daughter in 1888, when it began operating as an entertainment venue with dances and boat tours. Throughout the 20th century, it evolved into an important center for cave research and scientific exploration.
The National Speleological Society established their headquarters directly above the cave, making it a center for cave research and exploration in Alabama.
Visitors need membership in the National Speleological Society to explore the cave, and visits are only permitted during specific times of year. These restrictions help protect the delicate underground ecosystem from damage caused by human activity.
A rare cave crayfish was rediscovered here in 2022, confirming the species survived after decades of no sightings. Scientists were surprised by the discovery, as the creature was feared to have disappeared completely.
