Sara Delano Roosevelt Memorial House
Sara Delano Roosevelt Memorial House, Neo-Georgian townhouse in Upper East Side, United States.
The Sara Delano Roosevelt Memorial House consists of two connected townhouses on East 65th Street, built from red brick with stone details in the Neo-Georgian style. The interior includes formal rooms originally designed for residence that now serve institutional purposes.
Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt occupied this residence starting in 1908, when it was given as a wedding gift by Franklin's mother Sara Delano Roosevelt. It later transitioned from a private home to an institutional setting focused on research and public engagement.
The building now houses an institute dedicated to public policy, carrying forward the family's commitment to education and service. Visitors can observe how the spaces function as a center for discussion and learning.
Access to the house is available primarily through organized group tours offered on select days. Visitors should expect that academic activities take place inside and should confirm visiting arrangements in advance.
The two connected houses are designed as mirror images, with separate front reception rooms that can be joined through sliding doors to form larger gathering spaces. This clever design allowed residents to maintain privacy while hosting large events.
