Sentinels, Granite sculpture near Brady Street pedestrian bridge in Milwaukee, United States.
Sentinels is a sculpture composed of three red granite monoliths located near the Brady Street pedestrian bridge in Milwaukee. Each monolith stands approximately 15 feet (4.6 meters) tall and 4 feet (1.2 meters) wide, each bearing distinct carved patterns.
The artwork was created in 2005 by Jon Barlow Hudson commissioned by the Milwaukee County Department of Parks. It was developed as part of the Wisconsin Percent for Art Program, which supports public art installations throughout the region.
The carved forms draw inspiration from ancient Chinese jade ritual objects called ts'ung tubes. This design choice adds a cultural layer that connects distant traditions with the local urban landscape.
The sculpture is accessible and located in a public area near the Brady Street pedestrian bridge. Best viewing is during daytime when natural light highlights the carved details on the red granite surface.
The work is part of a dual installation, with a companion piece called Compass positioned at the top of the pedestrian bridge. Together, these two artworks create a complete composition that guides visitors through the space.
