Cleopatra's Wedge, Steel sculpture at Burns Commons, Milwaukee, US.
Cleopatra's Wedge is an 18-foot-tall weathering steel sculpture positioned vertically, with its angular form creating bold lines against the surrounding landscape. The surface develops its deep rust coloring through natural oxidation processes over time.
The sculpture was created in 1991 by artist Beverly Pepper using steel sourced from an abandoned freeway corridor in Milwaukee. This work emerged from a process of transforming industrial remains into lasting public art.
The sculpture represents a connection between industrial materials and artistic expression, transforming weathering steel into a monumental public artwork.
The sculpture is located at Burns Commons at the intersection of North Prospect Avenue and East Knapp Street. It remains accessible at all times and can be viewed easily from this public location.
Before settling in Milwaukee, the sculpture traveled to major cities including Chicago, New York, Florence, and Paris on an international exhibition circuit. This journey across continents reflects the widespread recognition of the artist's vision.
